I hold degrees in Social Work and Fine Art. Certificates in Art Therapy, Hypnotherapy, Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), Restorative Yoga and Ayurvedic medicine. I have spent most of my professional life as a university adjunct teaching classes in human behavior and communication. And, as a public speaker and change-maker, through group work and private coaching, assisting individuals with creative solutions for personal achievement. I provide a safe space for clients to tap into their personal creativity and problem solve from that springboard of possibility. Clients know what is best for themselves when given mental and emotional spaces to explore.
We receive messages all day long telling us who to be and how to be, in our daily life. I believe that everyone has the potential to carve out a fulfilling and meaningful space for themselves. Having a safe place to explore who you are without all the mask we wear and without the opinions of others is a great place to begin. When we are free to explore, without judgement, we can begin to decide what we want in an ecological way...a way that fits into the larger plan of our life. A plan that includes all of our desires and people and things we love.

NLP is the science of how we structure and utilize information. It incorporates language patterns with neurobiological processes and sensory-based interventions to advance behavior-modification changes designed to help improve the client’s self-awareness, communication skills, and social actions. NLP is used by professional athletes to imagine future success and then create strategies for achieving those goals. NLP is also utilized in individual and group coaching sessions to assist clients in accessing and changing their neurology and mental processing. NLP is used in EMDR, EFT, Hypnosis, for treating PTSD, anxiety, phobias, trauma and grief.

Dr. Erickson was the first to formulate clinical hypnosis (very different from stage hypnosis) in the 1950's. His method seeks to utilize whatever the patient brings to the session and find the strengths that the client already possesses and use these strengths to build positive, healthy behavioral patterns. Hypnosis incorporates light trance states or a feeling of relaxation that calms defenses that can sometimes block the very change the client is seeking. (Photo above of Erickson's famous office. What is Coaching and how is it different than therapy?
Two main ways Coaching is different from therapy is in time frame and focus. Coaching is future oriented and therapy focuses on the past and why things are like they are, frequently providing insight. Coaching does not focus on the past so you can gain insight into your own actions. Coaching focuses on well formulated outcomes and moves in that direction. For example: client says, "I'm sad all the time." A therapist may ask questions about parenting, sibling structure and memories from the past. A Coach may focus on times in your past when you were happy and what was going on then? The session will proceed in that direction. Payment methods are also different. That is, Therapist are licensed with the State they practice in and have received extensive education with 4-6 years at the university level (master's degree) as well as, 3000 hours practicing with state regulated supervision. Their licensure allows them to be paid using private insurance and medicare options.Coaching on the other hand, does not have regulations or education requirements. Most Coaches practice in a modality they specialize in such as hypnotherapy or Neuro-Linguistic Programming. You'll need to do research on your individual Coach and pay them out of pocket.
Do you need to have a degree or certificate to be a Life Coach?
The answer is no and some coaches do not. Most coaches however, have been trained in some modality such as hypnosis, Neuro-Linguistic Programming, EFT or Tapping, or Fitness or Spiritual practices. I suggest finding Coaches who offer a free consultation and listen to what plan they have for you. Every Coach is different and that is good news because every person is different. Before Coaching, you only had the option of your insurance and using whomever they approved and problems are not a"one size fits all" model. So now, with the advent of Coaching, you can find a professional who can assist you in future pacing your motivation and life goals. Some one who specifically creates a plan to assist you in meeting your future goals and usually with a full or partial money back guarantee.
